Sorry Mate is a graphic atonement for the cultural & actual genocides suffered by Indigenous Australians following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.
Systematically perpetrated by government agencies & individuals alike.
Indigenous Australians continue to face prejudicial deficits in healthcare, education, judicial procedure & life expectancy.
Yet Australia's history also retains a thread of misguided colonial paternalism, with individual & state believing forced assimilations were regretfully inevitable but benevolent. Sorry Mate acknowledges the catastrophic nature of well meant, but ultimately devastating, European intention.
Sorry Mate illustrates the flippancy of remorse unsubstantiated by action, making more individual the abstracted, largely tokenistic utterances of an unsympathetic nation.
